What is a carte de légitimation?

A carte de légitimation (CDL) is a document issued by Switzerland’s Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) to eligible people connected with diplomatic missions, international organizations and other recognized bodies. It serves as a Swiss residence permit and records the holder’s applicable status; privileges and immunities depend on that status.1

It is tied to a qualifying appointment or family status. It is not a general work permit that you obtain first and use to apply to any employer. The Swiss Mission’s CDL guidance sets out the rules for different institutions and cardholders.

What do you need?

Start with a vacancy and the employer’s requirements. Being on this list does not establish that a particular job, internship or consultancy includes a CDL. Before accepting an offer, ask HR:

  • Does this exact appointment qualify for FDFA registration, and which card category applies?
  • Which passport, contract and personal documents must I provide, and who submits the application?
  • Do I need an entry visa before travelling, and when may I start work?
  • What status applies to accompanying family members, and what happens when the appointment ends?

Our Switzerland application guide explains recruitment routes, CDL status and ordinary Swiss work permits. Confirm which arrangement applies to your appointment with HR before moving.
