A grade describes the level of a post. A step is a pay point within that grade: P-3 Step 2 pays more net base salary than P-3 Step 1, without changing the grade.
The hiring organization sets your starting step under its salary policy, taking account of the appointment and any recognized service or experience. Years of experience do not automatically equal a step. Use the step in your offer; use Step 1 for an initial comparison.
In the UN Secretariat’s Professional grades, increments normally require satisfactory service: one year between steps up to Step VII, then two years before each further increment. Director grades can have different qualifying periods. Other organizations apply their own staff rules.
P-1 to D-1 have 13 standard steps; D-2 has 10. A higher grade is a separate appointment or promotion, not the next step. This table excludes pay-protection points beyond the standard scale.
The highest October 2026 post adjustments at the same grade and step. These rates reflect living costs and exchange rates, rather than extra purchasing power.
Rates changed for 47 duty-station and country classifications between September 2026 and October 2026. Across changed classifications, the average was a decrease of 4.1 percentage points.

Open UNOPS CalcFor GS and NO roles, use the employer’s local salary scale. Consultant and contractor fees follow the terms of the individual contract.
No. The net base scale is already after UN staff assessment, but this estimate does not deduct pension or medical-insurance contributions. Family, hardship, rental and other allowances are not included. Your employer’s payroll calculation determines the amount paid.
Not necessarily. Post adjustment compensates for differences in living costs and exchange rates. Compare rent, household costs and appointment benefits as well as the dollar salary; the highest multiplier is not a ranking of disposable income.
ICSC publishes country-wide classifications and separate city rates where applicable. A country with one classification normally uses that rate for its duty stations. The pinned city shortcuts use the applicable official classification; they do not create extra rates.
No. It is the annualized value at the selected grade, step and October 2026 post-adjustment rate. A later multiplier revision, step increment, appointment change or period of unpaid leave can change what you earn during the year.
No. General Service and National Officer pay uses local scales, while consultant and contractor fees follow their contracts. This calculator covers the international Professional and Director grades P-1 to P-5 and D-1 to D-2.
