About Philippines
The Philippines is an archipelagic Southeast Asian country with urban life concentrated in Metro Manila. Districts, business centres and residential communities make a dense region. Locality and daily movement shape the experience of the city.
Practical comfort depends on proximity to routine destinations. Metro, rail, bus and road networks connect the region, but travel times can be substantial and rain can alter plans. Food, shopping, schools, services and recreation are widely available; flexible routines help residents manage traffic and distance.
The Philippines has a major international-organization presence. Twenty-nine UN entities operate in the country, and Metro Manila hosts the Asian Development Bank, the WHO Western Pacific Regional Office and IOM’s Global Administrative Centre. This gives the country a regional multilateral dimension across development finance, health, migration, disaster resilience, governance, inclusion and sustainable development.

How to apply for jobs in Philippines
Compare Philippines opportunities on IGOJobs.com, then apply on the employer’s official platform. Manila vacancies may belong to a UN agency, ADB, IOM, NGO or implementing partner, each with a separate account and selection process. Establish the exact duty station, contract category and whether the work is country, regional or project funded before applying.
1Use the employer’s official recruitment system+
Open the original vacancy and apply only through its stated portal. Keep a copy of the notice, including its grade, funding duration, duty station and nationality or local-eligibility conditions.
2Map evidence to the country portfolio+
Show concrete results relevant to disaster risk, climate, health, education, migration, governance, social protection or programme operations. Explain your role, counterpart institutions, scale and outcome rather than relying on broad development language.
3Address language and local context+
English is widely used in international work; Filipino and relevant local languages can be valuable for national or field-facing roles. Follow the vacancy’s language standard and demonstrate responsible experience with local partners where requested.
4Verify work and appointment status+
National or locally recruited posts may require Philippine citizenship or local work eligibility. For eligible international appointments, ask HR how entry, residence and employment status will be processed; consultants should not presume sponsorship.
5Prepare for assessment and relocation+
Expect competency interviews, written exercises, technical tests or presentations. Before moving, confirm employer, contract length, pay and tax basis, medical cover, security requirements, family eligibility, travel support and duty-station location.
Alien Employment Permit and institutional exemptions
Ordinary Philippine employment normally requires an Alien Employment Permit and 9(g) visa. Accredited personnel of an international organisation covered by an agreement with the Philippines may instead qualify for a Certificate of Exemption and, where relevant, a 47(a)(2) visa. This is not automatic: legal employer, accreditation, role, nationality and family status matter. Consultants, local hires, interns and contractors should confirm the applicable route in writing with HR before relocating.

Questions about careers in Philippines
Do I need Philippine nationality for a UN role?
No for every role. Internationally recruited vacancies may be open across nationalities, while National Officer, General Service and national-project posts often require Filipino citizenship or local eligibility. Check the advertised contract category and selection eligibility before submitting an application.
Is Manila the only duty station?
No. Manila is the main headquarters and country-office centre, but programmes can be based in Mindanao or other provinces. Field location affects travel, security, accommodation, family status and language expectations. Treat the vacancy’s duty station and work modality as essential terms.
Is English sufficient?
English is common across international organizations, but Filipino or local languages can be required for country-facing roles. The requirement changes with the portfolio and community engagement. List only substantiated language ability and tailor your application to the stated level.
Will a UN employer arrange work authorisation?
It depends on the hiring entity and appointment. Eligible staff of recognised organizations can fall within an institutional exemption or employer-supported immigration process. Local contracts and consultancies may be different. Request written guidance from the recruiting HR unit before relocating.
Do ADB and UN agencies share one application account?
No. Each international organization controls its own recruitment portal, application questions and assessment process. Use the official link in the vacancy and do not assume that an existing UN profile transfers to ADB, IOM, an NGO or a project contractor.
Can I apply without UN experience?
Yes if the notice does not require it. Experience in government, civil society, research, humanitarian response or the private sector can be relevant where it proves the required technical expertise. Use specific achievements to match every education, experience and competency criterion.
