About Pakistan

Pakistan is a populous South Asian federation with contrasting urban settings. Islamabad is planned and administrative; Karachi is a port and commercial metropolis. Lahore, Peshawar and Quetta have distinct cultural and regional roles. Provincial institutions shape public life.

Relocation is location-specific. Islamabad is generally quieter than Karachi or Lahore, but housing, congestion, air quality, utilities and security require neighbourhood research. Summers, monsoons and poor winter air can alter plans. International staff should follow employer security advice for field travel.

Pakistan has a broad UN presence, coordinated through One UN and field operations nationwide. Work spans climate resilience, disaster preparedness, health, education, food systems, migration, gender equality and social protection. It offers development and humanitarian careers grounded in long-term work with public institutions and communities.

How to apply for jobs in Pakistan

Compare Pakistan vacancies on IGOJobs.com, then open the official notice for the named employer. UN Secretariat and UNMOGIP roles use UN Careers and Inspira, while UNDP, UNICEF, IOM, UNOPS, WHO, WFP and other agencies maintain separate systems. The UN Pakistan jobs page can help identify country vacancies, but it does not replace the employer’s final application portal.

1Find the correct employer notice

Start with the duty station, organization, grade and deadline shown on IGOJobs, then use Apply now to reach the official posting. Search UN Careers for Secretariat and UNMOGIP positions; use each agency’s own careers page for agency, fund, programme, NGO and contractor roles. One login does not cover every employer.

2Build the required application profile

Create an Inspira account for UN Secretariat vacancies and complete all required fields; the Secretariat does not treat a standalone résumé as a substitute for its online application. Other employers may require a separate profile, personal-history form, résumé, motivation statement or consultancy proposal. Begin early enough to complete every mandatory field.

3Match evidence to Pakistan-based work

Address the stated education, years of experience, technical skills and competencies with measurable examples. For country and field roles, show relevant experience in programme delivery, government coordination, climate resilience, emergency operations, monitoring, safeguarding, procurement or community engagement when the notice asks for it. English is common, while Urdu or regional-language ability can be valuable where specified.

4Check category and immigration conditions

Identify whether the role is internationally recruited, National Officer, General Service, National Personnel Service Agreement, consultancy, internship or another employer-specific arrangement. Locally recruited roles may require Pakistani nationality, local residence or labour-market eligibility. Do not assume a UN/IO visa route applies: confirm it with the legal employer after selection.

5Prepare for assessment and deployment

Expect written exercises, technical tests, case studies or competency interviews. Before accepting an offer, confirm the legal employer, contract term, salary basis, insurance, tax treatment, relocation support, exact duty station and security requirements. For an international move, ask HR which visa and residence documentation it will support and what must be completed before travel.

UN/IO visa and ordinary work visa routes

Pakistan’s e-visa guidance provides a UN/International Organizations visa for officials or people deputed to work for a UN/IO, and eligible family members. It requires the relevant organization’s invitation and despatch letters (notes verbales), alongside the listed documents. This differs from an ordinary work visa, where the employing company submits through the e-visa portal. The legal employer and authorities must confirm eligibility, duration and any residence steps.

Questions about careers in Pakistan

Do I need Pakistani nationality for an international-organization job in Pakistan?

No. Internationally recruited roles can be open to eligible applicants of many nationalities, subject to each notice. National Officer, National Personnel Service Agreement, General Service and other locally recruited roles may require Pakistani nationality, local residency or labour-market eligibility. The vacancy wording controls.

Is Islamabad the only international-organization duty station in Pakistan?

No. Islamabad is the main office hub, but country programmes and emergency work can also be based in Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta or other locations. Living conditions, movement protocols and security requirements may differ sharply by duty station; assess the named location before applying.

Which languages matter for Pakistan-based roles?

English is commonly used in international-organization applications and professional work, while Urdu and regional languages can be valuable for national programming, field coordination and work with public counterparts. Treat the vacancy’s stated language requirement as decisive and describe proficiency accurately.

Does every international employee receive a UN/IO visa?

Not automatically. Pakistan’s UN/IO e-visa route is for qualifying officials or people deputed to work for a UN/IO, with organization documentation. Eligibility and the route for dependants are handled case by case. Consultants, locally recruited staff and other arrangements may instead be governed by ordinary immigration rules.

What does locally recruited mean in Pakistan?

National or locally recruited does not mean the role is less substantive; it describes the employer’s recruitment and employment framework. Such posts commonly have eligibility tied to the local labour market and different pay, tax, insurance, relocation and residence arrangements from internationally recruited appointments.

Can I apply without previous UN experience?

Yes if the notice does not require it. Relevant experience in small-island development, climate, oceans, health, public administration, disaster risk, operations, finance or community programmes can be competitive. Use measurable evidence that maps directly to the vacancy's technical and partnership requirements.
