About Afghanistan

Afghanistan is a mountainous country with regional cities and a social fabric rooted in communities. Kabul is an administrative and commercial centre, while Herat, Mazar-e Sharif, Kandahar and Jalalabad have distinct histories. Conflict, displacement, drought and political change shape everyday conditions.

Practical life varies sharply by place and household resources. Transport, healthcare, education, electricity, connectivity and housing can be uneven, and conditions for women and girls are subject to restrictive rules. Security and access can shift. Relocation needs location-specific advice, contingency planning and personal consideration.

Afghanistan’s international role is defined by humanitarian action, protection, human rights, development support and political engagement. UNAMA is a Special Political Mission with offices across the country, alongside agencies and partners responding to food insecurity, returns, health, education, livelihoods, climate shocks and disaster risk.

How to apply for jobs in Afghanistan

Compare Afghanistan vacancies on IGOJobs.com, then apply through the official portal named by the hiring organisation. UNICEF, WFP, UNHCR, IOM, UNDP, WHO, OCHA, FAO, UNAMA, NGOs and other employers have separate systems. Check whether the role is Kabul-based, provincial, national-only, international or remote before applying.

1Confirm employer, location and eligibility

Open the official notice and retain it. Verify the legal employer, actual duty station, contract duration, work modality, security conditions and nationality or local-eligibility rule. A country-level listing does not establish field conditions or family eligibility.

2Use the correct employer profile

Create and complete the account required by the vacancy. Secretariat roles can use UN Careers and Inspira, while agencies and NGOs use their own systems. Match each education, experience, technical, language and competency requirement to verifiable evidence.

3Show language and field relevance

Dari and Pashto are vital for many national and community-facing roles; English is widely used in international coordination. Demonstrate results in health, education, protection, food security, WASH, emergency response, logistics, access, data or programme management as relevant to the notice.

4Check appointment, visa and security conditions

National and locally recruited posts can require Afghan nationality or local eligibility. Afghanistan’s Foreign Affairs visa function handles visas and extensions for diplomatic and international organizations; ordinary employment and residence requirements can differ. Ask HR about the exact appointment, entry process, security clearance and any family restriction.

5Prepare for assessment and relocation

Expect technical tests, written exercises, competency interviews and references. Before travelling, confirm salary, tax, insurance, medical clearance, evacuation and emergency arrangements, travel approvals, accommodation, rest-and-recuperation, family eligibility and the current duty-station security framework.

Visa, residence and duty-station arrangements

Afghanistan’s Foreign Affairs visa function issues and extends visas for diplomatic and international organizations through employer processes. This route is distinct from ordinary employment and residence formalities. The legal employer, contract, nationality, location and current operating approvals determine documentation. Consultants and local hires should not assume the same entry, residence, security or dependant arrangements.

Questions about careers in Afghanistan

Do I need Afghan nationality for a UN position?

Not for every vacancy. Internationally recruited posts can be open across nationalities, while National Officer, General Service, national consultancy and many field roles specify Afghan nationality or local eligibility. The vacancy’s stated category and eligibility rule control.

Are all Afghanistan duty stations family eligible?

No. Family eligibility, travel permissions and security procedures are duty-station and time specific. Afghanistan has a substantial field footprint, and organisational security instructions can change. Confirm the current written designation, medical support, evacuation provisions and dependent arrangements directly with HR.

Are Dari or Pashto required?

They are often essential for national engagement, field delivery, communities and local partners. English is important for international roles; additional languages may be useful depending on the assignment. Follow the vacancy’s exact required and desirable language fields.

Will the employer arrange my Afghanistan visa?

It depends on the appointment. The Foreign Affairs visa function handles diplomatic and international-organization visas and extensions, normally through employer processes. Other employment can follow different requirements. Do not travel on an offer alone; obtain written instructions from HR and the responsible security team.

Are all jobs based in Kabul?

No. Kabul is the main coordination hub, but positions can be based in Kandahar, Mazar-i-Sharif, Jalalabad, Herat, Lashkar Gah, Kunduz and other locations. The duty station affects security, access, living conditions, travel and the appointment package.

Can I apply without UN experience?

Yes when the vacancy does not require it. Relevant government, NGO, humanitarian, health, education, logistics, data, research or private-sector work can be competitive if it demonstrates the technical and behavioural criteria. Use specific, evidence-based achievements matched to the notice.
