Mandate
The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei is a peacekeeping mission created by Security Council resolution 1990 in June 2011. It operates in the disputed Abyei Area between Sudan and South Sudan, where it protects civilians, monitors demilitarization, deters violence, supports law and order, facilitates humanitarian access and helps communities manage conflict. UNISFA also supports border-monitoring arrangements and dialogue needed for a peaceful settlement of Abyei’s unresolved status.
