About Türkiye
Türkiye spans Europe and Asia, with urban life shaped by commerce, migration and layers of history. Istanbul is its largest metropolitan centre, while Ankara, Izmir and other cities have different administrative, coastal or industrial rhythms. Its position between regions gives the country a strong sense of movement and exchange.
Daily life is neighbourhood-based. In Istanbul, ferries, rail, metro, buses and walking connect a very large city, yet distance and traffic still shape routines. Housing and services vary significantly by district; climate, coastline, markets and public spaces make urban life lively but require local planning.
Türkiye’s international role combines national cooperation with regional work. Ankara hosts the UN country presence, and Istanbul hosts UNDP’s Regional Hub for Europe and Central Asia. The country’s multilateral profile covers development, migration, refugees, climate resilience, industrial co-operation, gender equality and regional dialogue.

How to apply for jobs in Türkiye
Compare Türkiye vacancies on IGOJobs.com, then submit through the hiring organisation’s official portal. Istanbul regional offices, Ankara technical offices, UN country programmes and partner NGOs do not use one candidate account. Check whether the notice is internationally recruited, national, local, consultancy or humanitarian-field recruitment before applying.
1Identify the employer and city+
Read the full official notice and confirm the legal employer, reporting city, travel profile, contract duration and eligibility. An Istanbul regional post, Ankara country role and Gaziantep humanitarian assignment can have materially different functions and conditions.
2Complete the employer-specific application+
Use the portal specified by the organisation. A UN Secretariat profile does not automatically apply to UNDP, IOM, UNHCR, UN Women, WHO, FAO, UNIDO or an NGO. Address every mandatory education, experience, language and competency field with concrete evidence.
3Tailor regional and language evidence+
English is central in regional offices; Turkish is often important for national engagement and local coordination. Show the vacancy’s required language levels and demonstrate relevant experience across countries, with government, communities, refugee populations or operational partners where appropriate.
4Establish appointment and work status+
National and locally recruited roles may require Turkish citizenship or existing local eligibility. Ordinary foreign employment needs a work permit, which also serves as residence permission while valid. Eligible international staff can follow a Foreign Ministry protocol route under the organisation’s host agreement.
5Prepare for assessment and relocation+
Expect written tests, technical exercises, presentations and competency interviews. Before moving, confirm pay and tax basis, insurance, protocol ID or work-permit process, family conditions, security arrangements, travel, housing support and the actual office or field location.
Work permit and Foreign Ministry protocol identity card
Ordinary employment in Türkiye uses a work permit or exemption document, which serves as residence permission while valid. This differs from Foreign Ministry identity cards for accredited staff and dependants of covered international-organisation missions; the cards serve as residence permits. Protocol status is tied to accreditation, employer and assignment, not open labour-market permission. Consultants, interns and Turkish-law staff must confirm their route, documents and dependants with HR.

Questions about careers in Türkiye
Do I need Turkish nationality for a UN job in Türkiye?
No for every vacancy. Internationally recruited roles may be open across nationalities, while National Officer, General Service, national consultancy and locally recruited posts can require Turkish nationality or existing work eligibility. Use the vacancy’s category and eligibility wording as the controlling source.
Are Istanbul and Ankara interchangeable duty stations?
No. Istanbul is the principal regional hub, while Ankara hosts country, Central Asia and technical functions. Gaziantep and other south-eastern assignments can be humanitarian or field focused. Duty station affects reporting lines, travel, security, local language needs and relocation conditions.
Is Turkish required?
Turkish is often important for work with authorities, communities and national partners. English is widely used in Istanbul’s international offices. Requirements vary by employer and assignment, so follow the stated language fields and do not assume a regional role removes local-language expectations.
Do international staff need a Turkish work permit?
Not always. Ordinary foreign employment normally uses a work permit, which serves as residence permission while valid. Eligible personnel of covered international organizations can use a Foreign Ministry protocol and identity-card process. HR must identify the applicable route for the specific appointment.
Are Türkiye jobs mainly refugee-response roles?
No. Refugee and humanitarian work is a major market, particularly in the south-east, but Istanbul and Ankara also offer policy, gender, food systems, health, urban development, programme, technology and corporate-service roles. Read the actual portfolio instead of inferring it from the country.
Can I apply without previous UN experience?
Yes if the employer does not require it. Government, NGO, research, private-sector and field experience can be competitive where it directly evidences the advertised technical skills, regional collaboration and results. Address each minimum criterion with precise examples and dates.
