About Panama

Panama is shaped by maritime trade, logistics and the canal corridor. Panama City combines a modern skyline, older neighbourhoods, coastal space and green institutional districts. City of Knowledge concentrates universities, NGOs and international bodies.

Daily life is easier when home and regular destinations align with transport. Metro Lines 1 and 2 connect key corridors, with Line 2 linking to the airport branch. Heat, humidity and the rainy season affect walking and travel planning, while neighbourhood choice shapes commute time, service access and the balance between dense activity and quieter surroundings.

Panama has a strong regional UN footprint. Panama City hosts UNICEF’s regional office, OCHA’s Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, OHCHR’s regional presence, UNDP’s regional centre and UNODC’s regional office. This produces work across humanitarian coordination, human rights, development, migration, justice and child-focused policy.

How to apply for jobs in Panama

Compare Panama vacancies on IGOJobs, then apply through the employer named in the notice. Panama City hosts country, regional and administrative functions, but UNICEF, UNDRR, IOM, UNHCR, UNDP and other organizations use separate systems and appointment rules.

1Find vacancies on the correct portals

Open the original employer link after comparing roles. Secretariat and UNDRR vacancies use the UN recruitment environment, while UNICEF, IOM, UNHCR, UNDP and other employers maintain their own platforms. Confirm whether the post belongs to a Panama programme, regional office, global administrative function or field-facing portfolio.

2Build the employer's required profile

Create the account required by the legal employer and complete all fields before closing. A personal-history form or résumé submitted to one organization does not transfer automatically to another. Map education, skills, languages and experience directly to the notice and record the exact contract category and availability.

3Tailor language and regional evidence

Spanish is central to national work with authorities, communities and partners. Regional positions commonly require English and Spanish and may value Portuguese, French or another language. Use measurable examples in resilience, migration, child rights, protection, public policy, analysis or partnerships, and state languages accurately.

4Check appointment and authorization conditions

Identify whether the role is international, local, National Officer, General Service, consultancy, internship or temporary project work. Ordinary foreign employment follows Panama's labour-permit and immigration routes. Eligible officials of accredited IGOs may instead be supported through Foreign Ministry Protocol arrangements. Ask the employer which process applies to the actual appointment.

5Prepare for assessment and verify the offer

Expect written exercises, technical assessments, case studies, presentations or competency interviews as specified. Before relocating, confirm legal employer, duty station, geographic portfolio, duration, pay, insurance, travel, family support and authorization process. Do not make travel or housing commitments until HR confirms the applicable status.

Panama work permits and protocol status

Ordinary foreign employment needs a Ministry of Labour permit and immigration status. Accredited IGO staff may follow a different route. The Foreign Ministry's Protocol Directorate handles international-mission visas and arrangements for recognized organizations and officials. Eligibility depends on employer, appointment and status; the employer must confirm and start the process. A Panama City address or offer does not establish special status.

Questions about careers in Panama

Do I need Panamanian nationality for an IGO job in Panama?

No. Internationally recruited posts can be open to applicants worldwide. National Officer, General Service and local support roles can require Panamanian nationality or local eligibility. A Panama City regional-office address does not make every role international; follow the notice's nationality and contract wording.

Is Spanish required for international jobs in Panama?

Often, but not always. Spanish is important for country-office work with government, communities and partners. Regional roles may require English and Spanish, and technical posts can list Portuguese, French or another language as an asset. Follow the vacancy's language table and describe proficiency honestly.

Will an IGO arrange my work authorization in Panama?

Not automatically. Ordinary foreign employment follows Panama's labour-permit and immigration rules. Eligible international officials may use Foreign Ministry Protocol Directorate arrangements. Eligibility depends on entity, appointment and individual status, so HR must confirm the route before travel.

How does regional work differ from country-office work?

UNICEF LACRO and UNDRR's Americas and Caribbean office support multiple countries, often requiring wider policy, coordination or travel experience. Country-office posts focus on Panama's cooperation programme and national partners. Check office, portfolio and travel—not only the Panama City duty station.

Are all IGO roles based in Panama City?

No. Most regional and agency offices are in Panama City, particularly Ciudad del Saber, but programmes can include missions or work linked to Darién and other provinces. Conditions, security, travel and family arrangements depend on the actual duty station and contract.

Can I apply without previous UN experience?

Yes, if you meet the requirements. Employers assess education, experience, languages and competencies in each notice; prior UN service matters only when required. Use measurable examples from government, NGOs, academia or business showing relevant technical and partnership skills.
