About Canada
Canada’s cities have distinct identities. Montréal, Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa and Calgary combine public, cultural and economic roles. Montréal has a dense neighbourhood setting and strong international sector.
Daily life is local. Montréal’s métro and bus network make many districts practical without a car, while urban planning prioritises proximity between homes, shops, services and workplaces. Neighbourhood choice shapes housing, commute length, green-space access and winter routines; a realistic budget and an address near destinations matter.
Canada’s clearest international-organization hub is Montréal. It hosts the International Civil Aviation Organization, the UN specialized agency for global civil-aviation standards, and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity. Together they concentrate aviation, environmental diplomacy, technical policy and multilateral meetings, complemented by wider Canadian engagement in development, peace, health and climate cooperation.

How to apply for jobs in Canada
Compare Canada vacancies on IGOJobs, then open the official employer notice. Montréal and Ottawa do not use a shared recruitment system: ICAO, UNESCO/UIS, UNHCR and IOM maintain separate processes. Confirm the duty station, contract category and Canadian work-authorization requirements before applying.
1Find the right employer portal+
Use the original vacancy link. ICAO uses its dedicated careers platform; UIS opportunities appear through UNESCO human-resources channels; UNHCR and IOM use their own recruitment systems. Do not send speculative applications to a local office unless its official notice expressly permits it.
2Build the correct profile for the employer+
Create the account specified in the vacancy and complete mandatory fields before the deadline. ICAO may direct applicants to its current platform; UNHCR generally requires a complete online profile and does not accept emailed applications. Maintain separate records of profiles, attachments and submissions because employer accounts do not transfer.
3Tailor technical evidence and languages+
Match education, experience and outcomes exactly to the post. For Montréal, French can support local collaboration; ICAO roles commonly require English and may value working knowledge of another ICAO official language. UIS roles need credible evidence in statistics, data management or relevant subject matter. State language proficiency honestly.
4Verify category and Canadian authorization+
Identify whether the post is internationally recruited, locally recruited, General Service, consultancy, internship or temporary appointment. Local roles may require Canadian citizenship, permanent residence or an existing right to work. Eligible employees of recognized IGOs can use a distinct immigration route, but it depends on employer, contract and circumstances, not merely the duty station.
5Prepare for selection and offer confirmation+
Expect screening, technical exercises, written assessments, competency interviews or presentations. Before relocating, confirm the employer, duration, pay and benefits, insurance, pension, tax treatment, relocation support, work-permit process and any separate immigration requirements for accompanying family members.
LMIA-exempt permits for eligible IGO employees
Employees of a foreign mission or organisation recognised under the Foreign Missions and International Organizations Act use a work-permit route, supported by an employer contract or letter. IRCC does not require an LMIA or Employer Portal offer number. This is not open Canadian work permission. Other Canadian-law jobs may need an employer-specific permit with an LMIA or exemption. The legal employer confirms status, immigration documents, dependent route and relocation timing before travel.

Questions about careers in Canada
Do I need Canadian citizenship for an IGO job in Canada?
Not for every appointment. Internationally recruited roles can accept eligible nationals from member states or the wider advertised pool. Locally recruited, General Service and some national positions often require Canadian work authorization or local eligibility. Apply only where the notice's nationality and residence rules fit.
Is French required for international jobs in Canada?
Not invariably. ICAO values English plus working knowledge of another ICAO official language, and Montréal workplace or federal-partnership roles may value French. Other roles work mainly in English. The vacancy's required and desired language criteria, rather than a city's reputation, determine eligibility.
Will an IGO arrange my Canadian work authorization?
A recognized IGO can support an LMIA-exempt work-permit application for an eligible employee, but it is not automatic immigration status. The employer must provide required documentation and you must meet general requirements. Confirm the route with HR and IRCC before travel or resignation.
Which Canadian cities matter most for IGO careers?
Montréal is the specialist hub for ICAO and UIS work in aviation, standards and international data. Ottawa is strongest for representation, refugee protection, migration and federal relationships; UNHCR and IOM have offices there. The legal employer and advertised duty station matter more than a general Canada label.
Can I apply without previous UN experience?
Yes if the vacancy does not require it. Match your education, professional experience, languages and technical evidence to each criterion, using results that show relevant international, regulatory, research or programme experience. Previous UN service helps only when it is expressly required or directly relevant.
Is there one recruitment account for Canada-based organizations?
No. ICAO, UIS, UNHCR and IOM recruit through their own systems or vacancy notices. Find roles through IGOJobs, then complete the application in the employer system named in that notice. A profile or documents held by one organization will not normally transfer.
