Mission and objectives
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is a global leader in the fight against illicit drugs, crime, corruption and terrorism, with widely recognized expertise and specialization on issues pertaining to international cooperation in criminal matters. Established in 1997 through a merger between the United Nations Drug Control Programme and the Centre for International Crime Prevention, UNODC operates in all regions of the world through an extensive network of field offices.
The UNODC Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific (ROSEAP) has a team of over 300 staff providing advice and technical assistance related to the rule of law, non-traditional security threats, law enforcement, criminal justice and drug-related supply and health issues. The Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific in Bangkok is home to a multi-disciplinary team of close to 100 regional programme managers, advisors and administrators working with, and supporting, Member States and regional organizations, and aligned programme offices. To implement its work the closest to where it is needed, ROSEAP has satellite presence in 10 countries, including in Fiji.
Context
Transnational organized crime and related illicit markets in the Pacific are becoming increasingly complex and diversified, creating challenges for Member States and underscoring the importance of accessible, evidence-based information and analysis.
UNODC produces analytical and information products to strengthen the evidence base available to Member States and regional partners in responding to illicit drugs, transnational organized crime and related threats. UNODC Pacific is currently preparing several knowledge products requiring graphic design and publication layout support. These include information material on international drug control standards and conventions for use at a Drug Data Workshop, a paper examining online gambling and scam-related issues, and an Illicit Financial Flows Threat Assessment.
The substantive analysis and written content will be developed and provided by UNODC. The Online Volunteers will support the transformation of this content into clear, accessible and professionally designed products suitable for dissemination to government counterparts, regional organizations and other relevant stakeholders.
Through this assignment, the Online Volunteers will contribute to UNODC's efforts to support evidence-based responses to illicit drugs, transnational organized crime and related threats in the Pacific, contributing to Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
