In response to what was stated by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on the Malvinas Island, I wanted to remind you that the Malvinas Islands, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding areas are part of the national territory of Argentina, illegally occupied by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, are the subject of a sovereignty dispute between the two countries, recognized by the United Nations and by other international organizations. The illegal occupation by Britain of the islands is from January of 1833, when British forces occupied the islands, expelling the legitimate Argentinian authorities and substituting them this was at a time of peace and in violation of the international law valid at the time, was never recognized by Argentina. The General Assembly in its resolution 2065 recognizes the existence of a sovereignty dispute and urges the government of Argentina and the United Kingdom to renew negotiations in order to find a peaceful and lasting solution to the dispute as a way of decolonizing the territory. The special decolonization Committee has pronounced several times to this effect. The last time was in June of this year. Argentina reiterates its full readiness to resume bilateral negotiations, substantive ones, with the United Kingdom, in line with Resolution 2065. Our country reaffirms its commitment to a peaceful resolution of disputes through effective multilateralism and a rules-based order. We urge the United Kingdom to fulfill its obligations in the area of decolonization and to immediately cease its non-compliance with international law. In line with international law, the parties to a dispute must refrain from introducing unilateral modifications to a situation while the dispute is still pending resolution, nor adopt measures that aggravate the dispute. With regard to Malvinas, this refers to Resolution 39/49. which was adopted almost 50 years ago. In that resolution, the General Assembly urges the two parties to refrain from adopting decisions that imply introducing unilateral modifications in the situation while the islands go through a process recommended by the United Nations. The Republic of Argentina reaffirms its legitimate sovereignty right on the Malvinas Islands, South Georgia, and South Sandwich Islands, and the surrounding maritime areas, which are part and parcel of national Argentinian territory through its under law and based on history, Argentine Malvinas Argentine territory.
